Mike joined Avon and Somerset Constabulary in 2004 and served for 21 years as a uniformed officer and leader in local policing and force command roles. Over the course of his career, he developed extensive experience in operational leadership, community safety and partnership working, building a strong reputation for delivering innovative approaches to complex policing challenges.

In 2015, Mike became the Bristol representative for the newly established knife crime portfolio, where he led the launch of the force’s first knife surrender scheme, test purchase operation and alignment with Operation Sceptre. Over the following decade, as Avon and Somerset’s knife crime lead, he introduced a number of innovative measures to tackle and reduce knife crime, while growing surrender and test purchase activity into some of the largest operations of their kind in the country.

As both a long-term knife crime lead and local policing commander, Mike has been instrumental in building new community partnerships that complement established arrangements such as Community Safety Partnerships and Serious Violence Reduction Partnerships. His work has focused on strengthening the ability of emergency services and local partners to protect the public in the face of increasing financial and societal pressures.

In 2022, Mike co-founded the Avon and Somerset Community Bleed Kit Partnership, a pioneering community initiative designed to save lives from catastrophic bleeding before traditional emergency services arrive. Under his continued leadership, the partnership has expanded into a South West collaboration governed by the South West Ambulance Service and has directly contributed to saving 14 lives to date.

With more than 1,000 bleed kit sites now established across the South West, and other areas of the UK adopting the model, Mike continues to work with partners to support the national development of effective community responses to catastrophic bleeding.

In November 2025, Mike was promoted to Superintendent and appointed Local Policing Commander for Swindon with Wiltshire Police.

He also holds the strategic lead for knife crime and serious violence across the force, where he is overseeing a review of current activity and partnership working to shape Wiltshire Police’s new 2026–2029 Knife Crime Strategy.
