Dr Mark Brain

Dr Mark Brain is a former police officer and a Cardiff University doctoral graduate specialising in the organisational causes of mental illness in policing. His research, now archived in the National Police Library, examines how institutional structures and workplace relations generate psychological harm. Drawing on 86 unstructured narrative interviews with serving and retired officers, his work demonstrates that chronic organisational pressures, rather than exposure to traumatic incidents, are the primary drivers of mental ill‑health in policing. His findings challenge individualised explanations of cognitive suffering and argue for a fundamental re‑examination of the cultural and structural conditions under which police officers work.
