Helen began working as an emergency planner for British Transport Police in 2015. Successive internal promotions now see her leading a large, multi-functional team ensuring the organisation’s compliance with the Civil Contingencies Act (2004). She has been a NILO since 2018 and is responsible for the development of the NILO risk register and strategy, as well as developing the Police NILO role nationally. Her PhD, undertaken part-time alongside work, examines the vicarious experience of trauma with focus on the use of tear gas, and has led to her current research regarding postmemory and the vicarious experience of disaster.
