PRISM-HD (Patient-Related Improvements in Safety Management through Human Factors and Decision-Making) is an immersive training programme that bridges the worlds of aviation and healthcare. Built on the principle that the Human Factors and Decision-Making frameworks that have transformed aviation safety can do the same for medicine, PRISM-HD delivers hands-on, real-world training designed to eliminate errors and save lives.
The programme offers training across three core areas - Human Factors, Decision Making, and Patient Safety - and is designed to support doctors, clinical teams, healthcare organisations, and emergency services. The goal is measurable: safer decisions, stronger teams, and better patient outcomes.
What sets PRISM-HD apart is its unique training environment. Participants train on-site at London Luton Airport, working directly on a Boeing 737 flight simulator alongside current airline pilots and medical professionals. This immersive, real-world setting puts learners under the same conditions that aviation crews navigate daily, translating those high-stakes protocols into practical clinical application.
The programme is backed by credible voices from both industries. Captain Harriett Pound, CEO of Flight Deck Strategic Solutions, and Dr Derek Hicks, Emergency Medicine Consultant, both champion PRISM-HD's mission - reinforcing that aviation has a great deal to offer the medical and emergency service worlds in the fight to reduce preventable harm.
