Extraction via Sloping Cableway

See high-angle rescue techniques in action.

This live demonstration showcases a sloping cableway system in action: a precision rope rescue technique used to extract a person locked onto a structure at height, where standard horizontal systems cannot operate alone.

Delivered in collaboration with Thames Valley Police, the scenario will see an officer raised until level with a subject attached to the structure, before guiding them to a place of safety — with the ability to rapidly withdraw the officer and rope system if the situation demands it.

This is a rare opportunity to watch expert rescue teams apply advanced rigging principles in a real-world scenario, and to engage directly with the Lyon Work & Rescue team on what this means for your own operations.

Extraction via Sloping Cableway in Partnership with Thames Valley Police

Thames Valley Police is the largest non-metropolitan police force in England and Wales, covering over 2,200 square miles across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, and serving a diverse population of more than 2.34 million people. Why Attend This Demonstration?

A sloping cableway is a powerful variation on the standard horizontal cableway with an extra lowering line on the uphill side that gives rescue teams precise control over both horizontal and vertical movement. It is the system of choice when loads or casualties need to be kept clear of a structure, or when obstacles sit between the hazard and the area of safety.

Seeing it deployed in a live police collaboration scenario brings the technique to life in a way that no manual or classroom session can replicate.

You'll gain:

  • A clear understanding of how a sloping cableway differs from a standard horizontal system and when each is the right choice.
  • First-hand sight of a controlled police extrication — officer raised to height, held level with a subject, and guided to safety with full rope control at every stage.
  • Insight into the critical role of rope control devices on both ends of a tensioned line, and the operational advantages this delivers.
  • The ability to explain how a cableway can form an effective rigged rescue rope system in complex height environments.
  • Direct access to the Lyon Work & Rescue team to discuss how these techniques could enhance your own rescue capability.
